Cllr Mel Allcott: “End the Westminster Soap Opera and Deliver for Worcester”
Following the resignation of Sir Keir Starmer as Prime Minister and Leader of the Labour Party, Worcester Liberal Democrats have called for an end to the political instability that has dominated Westminster and a renewed focus on the issues that matter to local people.
Liberal Democrat parliamentary spokesperson for Worcester, Cllr Mel Allcott, said the country cannot afford another prolonged period of political uncertainty while communities continue to face pressures on household finances, local healthcare services and public services.
Cllr Allcott argued that Labour’s leadership turmoil risks continuing a decade of instability at the heart of government, leaving residents frustrated that politicians are focused on Westminster infighting rather than delivering meaningful change.
The Liberal Democrats are calling on whoever succeeds Sir Keir Starmer to prioritise action on the cost-of-living crisis, NHS waiting times and access to local healthcare.
Commenting on the resignation, Cllr Mel Allcott said:
“People across Worcester and the country are sick of being let down by an endless merry-go-round of Prime Ministers while nothing really changes for them.
“Labour promised change, but we have ended up with more uncertainty and instability when people are crying out for leadership and solutions.
“It is time to end this Westminster soap opera and get on with delivering positive change for people in our community.
“Residents want to know they can get a GP appointment when they need one, that our local hospital has the resources it needs, and that the more than 55,000 people currently waiting for treatment across Worcestershire can get the care they deserve.
“Whoever becomes the next Prime Minister must focus on fixing the NHS, tackling the cost-of-living crisis and restoring trust in politics.
“The people of Worcester deserve a government that is focused on their priorities, not internal political drama.”
