St Nicholas ward Liberal Democrat city councillor John Rudge has been nominated for a BBC Make a Difference Award in recognition of his dedication to protecting and enhancing the local environment.

The nomination was submitted by Worcester resident Jon Taylor, who wanted to recognise John's outstanding work restoring the neglected pond at Corfe Avenue.

Jon said:
"I wanted to nominate John because of the incredible work he has done at Corfe Avenue. He took on an overgrown and neglected pond and, with the help of a small team of volunteers, transformed it into a wildlife haven. The results of his hard work and dedication are impressive, and I felt it deserved recognition."

The Corfe Avenue project was led entirely by John and local volunteers, who gave up their time to clear years of overgrowth and restore the pond for the benefit of wildlife and the local community.

John's commitment to the environment extends beyond Corfe Avenue. As a member of Worcester City Council's Environment Committee, he has championed projects to enhance biodiversity across St Nicholas ward and the wider Warndon Villages area. He is also a regular participant in Warndon Wombles community litter picks.

John has also been a driving force behind efforts to restore Offerton Lane Nature Reserve. The site, which includes two balancing ponds managing surface water from the M5 motorway and Warndon Villages, had become heavily overgrown after years of neglect. John has worked tirelessly to keep the restoration project on the Council's agenda and to secure funding for its future.

Volunteers from Worcester Environmental Group have helped clear sections of overgrown vegetation, while ecological surveys for protected species, including Great Crested Newts, are being undertaken before major restoration work begins. With the purchase requisition now submitted, residents can look forward to seeing the nature reserve restored as a haven for wildlife once again.

Responding to the nomination, John said:
"I'm honoured to have been nominated, but this recognition really belongs to the volunteers who have worked alongside me. Whether restoring the pond at Corfe Avenue, caring for Offerton Lane or taking part in community litter picks, it's amazing what can be achieved when people come together to look after the places they care about."

The BBC Make a Difference Awards celebrate people who go above and beyond to improve life in their communities. John's nomination recognises not only his practical conservation work, but also his commitment to bringing people together to protect and enhance the natural environment for future generations.
