Worcester Liberal Democrats Condemn Former Councillor’s Abuse and Call for Accountability
Worcester Liberal Democrats have condemned the horrific violence and abuse reported in the case of former Worcester councillor Shawaz Ditta, who has been jailed for rape.
The group expressed its support for the woman he abused and said the case represented a profound betrayal of the standards residents rightly expect from those who hold public office.
Cllr Sarah Murray, White Ribbon Ambassador and Domestic Abuse Champion, said:
“My thoughts are first and foremost with the woman who suffered this appalling abuse. She deserves dignity, privacy and support.
“Voters expect their elected representatives to act with integrity, decency and respect for others. This horrific behaviour betrays those expectations, casts a shadow over local public life and damages public trust.
“We have a responsibility to condemn it unequivocally and to challenge the misogyny, entitlement and controlling behaviour that allow violence against women and girls to persist. No position, reputation or political connection should ever shield an abuser from accountability.”
Cllr Karen Holmes said:
“Residents place their trust in those elected to represent them. With that trust comes a responsibility to uphold the most basic standards of humanity and respect. The abuse described in this case is abhorrent.
“People will understandably feel anger and dismay that someone who held public office could cause such terrible harm. Those of us serving Worcester must be clear in our condemnation and demonstrate through our actions the standards our communities deserve.
“Our overriding concern must be for the woman who suffered this abuse, and for everyone living in fear of violence. They deserve to know that their safety matters and that support is available.”
