Cllr Jessie Jagger has criticised comments made by Nigel Farage describing communities like Worcester as “basket cases”, saying the people of the city deserve far better.

Jagger, who featured on BBC One’s Politics Midlands on Sunday (15th Feb), said:

“Worcester is not a basket case. It is a city full of hardworking families, business owners, carers, teachers and entrepreneurs who contribute enormously to our region.”

She added that many Worcester residents placed their trust in Reform at the ballot box and that those voters should not be dismissed.

“Thousands of Worcester residents voted Reform. Whether you agree with that choice or not, those voters deserve respect. It is not acceptable to ask for people’s trust and then talk down about the communities they live in.”

Cllr Jagger said political leaders have a responsibility to raise the tone of debate and focus on solutions rather than insults.

During the programme, she also argued that the Midlands’ real challenge is not its people, but the over-centralisation of economic power in Westminster.

She highlighted the Liberal Democrats’ long-standing commitment to decentralisation — including proposals to move key Treasury functions to the Midlands and establish a Department for Growth based outside London.

“If we are serious about rebalancing the economy, we must move power — not just rhetoric — out of London. The Midlands doesn’t need pity or patronising language. It needs trust, investment and real economic authority.”

Cllr Jagger pointed to Worcester’s record in delivering regeneration projects and supporting local businesses as evidence of what local communities can achieve when given the tools to succeed.

“Our city’s strength comes from its people. They deserve politicians who believe in them.”
